Green Hosting is like the traditional web hosting, but the energy (electricity) to power the web servers and the whole company is provided by eco-friendly renewable sources of energy. These green sources of energy help to reduce the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere produced by some electric power-plants (coal power-plant for example). In replacement, green hosting companies focus on using windmills and solar panels to produce electricity.

Using greener sources of energy is one way to go, but also reducing the power required to run the business is another strategy. For example, some companies use servers and equipment that require less energy.

Many other factors influence the green quote. Some use propane instead of diesel for their back-up generators. Employees have incentives to use alternative transportation. These eco-friendly host companies also help by planting trees to capture carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. This action compensates for companies producing extra carbon dioxide.

You can look for the "Green Tag" known as Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs). This means that the energy used is created by green sources (for example: wind, solar, hydro).
